General
What is Nurse Charting Pro?
Nurse Charting Pro is a bedside charting app for nurses. You chart through structured assessments, the app generates a professional narrative, and all patient data stays on your device. At the end of your shift, the encryption key is destroyed so nothing from that shift can be recovered.
Which specialties and settings does it support?
Two specialties: psychiatric (8 charting categories including mental status, thought, safety, and SBAR handoff) and clinical (7 categories including vitals, Morse fall scale, skin and wound, IV lines, head-to-toe). You can chart both specialties in the same shift. Supported settings include med-surg, home health, long-term care, skilled nursing, and psych inpatient.
Which devices does it run on?
iOS 13 or later (iPhone and iPad) and Android 8 or later. The app is designed for bedside use on a phone or tablet.
Does it work offline?
Yes, on purpose. Nurse Charting Pro is offline-first because chart storage is local and there is no cloud patient-record database. You can chart and export without a data connection. AI narrative generation needs connectivity while the note is being generated because the app sends the chart context through our secure narrative proxy for that request.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There is no account, no username, and no password. Download the app, pick your specialty, and start charting. Your subscription is handled through your Apple ID or Google account at the store level.
Subscription and billing
How much does it cost?
Two tiers: Pro at $4.99/month and Pro Plus at $6.99/month. Pro includes AI narrative generation and CPRS-formatted export. Pro Plus adds SBAR verbal handoff reports. See the Pricing page for the full comparison.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — a 30-day free trial. The trial is billed through the App Store or Google Play (whichever store you downloaded from), so a payment method is required to start it. Cancel before the trial ends and you will not be charged.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
Open Settings → Manage Subscription inside the app. That opens the RevenueCat Customer Center where you can cancel, switch plans, or restore purchases. If Customer Center is unavailable, the app falls back to your platform's native subscription settings (Apple ID Subscriptions or Google Play Subscriptions).
What is "Restore Purchases"?
If you reinstall the app or switch to a new phone, tap Restore Purchases on the Subscription screen or paywall to restore your active subscription on the new device. Your charts do not transfer — they were already crypto-shredded at the end of each shift — but your entitlement does.
How do refunds work?
Refunds are handled by Apple or Google, not by us, because they are the ones who billed you. Request a refund through reportaproblem.apple.com (iOS) or Google Play's Order History (Android).
Privacy and data
Where is my patient data stored?
Only on your device. All Protected Health Information is encrypted with AES-256 at rest; the encryption key lives in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore. Nothing about your patients is ever stored on our servers. See the Privacy Policy for the full technical detail.
What does "end-of-shift crypto-shredding" actually mean?
At the end of every shift, the app destroys the encryption key that was used to protect that shift's data. Without the key, the encrypted data on the device is mathematically unrecoverable — even by us, even by law enforcement, even by a forensics team. This is how we guarantee that no shift's PHI can leak after the shift ends.
Can my manager, facility, or anyone else see my charts?
No. There is no admin dashboard, no facility console, and no "team" view. Your device is the only copy during the shift, and the data is destroyed at end of shift. If you need to hand off a chart mid-shift, use the export flow described below.
What does "export" mean if nothing is in the cloud?
Export happens locally on your device. Narratives can be copied or shared as text formatted for CPRS. C-CDA export writes an XML file on-device and hands it to the system share sheet — you decide where it goes (email, AirDrop, Files, Drive). Send to EHR (see below) pushes a FHIR DocumentReference straight from your device to the selected EHR. In every case, the data leaves your device only when you choose to send it somewhere, and it never touches our servers.
Is my charting data subject to subpoena or legal discovery through Nurse Charting Pro?
We have no server-side PHI to subpoena. If you need to preserve a narrative for legal or regulatory reasons, capture and export it in-app during the shift — once the shift ends and the key is shredded, the data is unrecoverable.
Features and support
How does AI narrative generation work?
Available on Pro and Pro Plus. You chart using structured checkboxes and selections; the app sends your clinical entries (structured selections plus any free text you type) over Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 to a server-side proxy we operate, which forwards to OpenAI. The OpenAI API key lives server-side and is never in the app bundle. The generated narrative comes back to your device and is stored only there. The chart data model has no fields for patient name, Medical Record Number (MRN), or date of birth. Free-text fields are sent as entered, so our guidance is to avoid patient names, MRNs, dates of birth, room or bed numbers, addresses, phone numbers, exact dates, and similar identifiers in AI-bound free text unless your facility deployment has approved identifiable PHI transmission. For facility deployments where PHI may transit the proxy, an executed Business Associate Agreement between Nurse Charting Pro and the facility is required, and our OpenAI BAA + Zero Data Retention (ZDR) configuration must be active before PHI flows.
What are SBAR verbal handoff reports?
Pro Plus only. In addition to the written narrative, Pro Plus generates an SBAR-formatted verbal handoff (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) for you to read aloud at shift change. See the Features page for examples.
How does "Send to EHR" (Epic / Cerner) work?
Pro and Pro Plus. Nurse Charting Pro supports SMART on FHIR integrations with Epic and Oracle Health (Cerner). The first time you tap Send to EHR, an in-app consent modal explains exactly what will be transmitted and where; you must acknowledge it before the OAuth flow begins. Authentication runs in the system browser using OAuth 2.0 + PKCE, so your EHR credentials are never seen by our app or our servers. Only the narrative goes across, packaged as a FHIR DocumentReference. Today the integration is sandbox-only while we complete vendor onboarding; production availability is tracked on the Enterprise page.
What is C-CDA export?
Pro and Pro Plus. C-CDA export produces a standards-compliant XML document on your device and surfaces it through the system share sheet — you pick where it goes. No server is involved, no authentication is required, and nothing is transmitted to us.
How do I contact support or report a bug?
In-app: Settings → Help & Support → Report Issue. By email: support@nursechartingpro.com. When reporting a bug, tell us what you were doing, what you expected to happen, and what actually happened. Because we do not have access to your device's data, these details are how we reproduce the issue.
