Getting Started with Nurse Charting Pro
From install to your first AI narrative in about five minutes. There is no account to create, no facility to set up, no team to invite, and no login. You install, accept the privacy policy, pick your specialty, add a room, and start charting.
Nurse Charting Pro never asks for a patient name, medical record number, or date of birth — charts are tied only to a room number you choose. At end of shift the encryption key is destroyed (crypto-shredding), so the data cannot be recovered. That is the architectural keystone that makes the no-account model safe.
Install the app
Supported devices
Nurse Charting Pro runs on iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. Layouts adapt to tablet — there are no phone-only gestures or hidden swipes you have to learn.
First launch
What you will see
- The launch screen briefly checks for any data left over from a previous shift.
- A privacy policy and terms-of-use modal appears the first time you open the app (and any time those documents change). You tap to acknowledge — there is no email, no password, and no "create account" step.
- The app lands on the home screen, ready for you to start a shift.
If a previous shift was not ended
If the app finds encrypted data from a shift that was never ended (for example, if your phone died mid-shift), it asks whether you want to Resume Shift or Start Fresh. Start Fresh runs the same crypto-shredding sequence as End Shift — the previous shift's encryption key is destroyed and the data becomes unrecoverable.
Optional: set your profile
Settings → Profile lets you save a nurse name and a unit label so they appear on generated narratives. This is a local-only label, not an account — the app does not sync it anywhere.
Pick your specialty
Nurse Charting Pro supports two specialties, and you can chart both in the same shift. Pick whichever describes the patient in front of you. You can change the default any time from Settings → Shift Specialty.
Psych
Eight categories: Environment, Mental, Thought, Safety, Speech, Function, Medical, Summary.
Clinical
Eight categories: Safety Check, Vitals, Morse Fall Scale, Glasgow Coma Scale, Skin/Wound, IV Lines, Head-to-Toe Assessments, Notes & Education.
Both
When set to Both, the app prompts for the chart type each time you start a new chart, so a single shift can mix psych and clinical patients.
Your first chart
- From the home screen, add a room. The only identifier the app ever asks for is a room number (a bed letter or number is optional). Never enter a patient name, MRN, or DOB.
- Tap the room to open it. If your specialty is set to Both, choose Psych or Clinical for this chart.
- For a clinical chart, the first screen is Safety Check. Set the care setting (Home, Hospital (Acute), SNF, Long-Term Care, Assisted Living, Inpatient Rehab, LTACH, or Outpatient/Clinic) and any active care programs (Home Health, Hospice, Palliative, Skilled Post-Acute Rehab). These tags shape the assessments you see and the language the AI uses; selecting Home Health expands a CMS homebound-justification block. You can change them per chart.
- Work through the eight categories for your specialty in any order. A progress bar shows what is left.
- From the categories screen, tap Review & Generate to produce an AI narrative for the chart, or Verbal Handoff Report to produce an SBAR. Both are editable on-device before you copy or share them.
- When the shift is over, tap End Shift. This runs crypto-shredding — every chart, every narrative, and every SBAR from this shift is destroyed by deleting the encryption key. Export anything you need to keep before tapping End Shift.
Pro tip: Use the AI narrative feature to convert your tap-and-select charting into a professionally formatted nursing note. The first 8 generations per install are free (the pool is shared with SBAR), and the counter lives in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore so reinstalls do not reset it.
What it costs
Two paid tiers, both with a 30-day free trial billed through Apple or Google.
- Free — 8 generations per install, shared between AI narratives and SBAR. Every other feature is available.
- Pro — $4.99/month. Unlimited AI narratives.
- Pro Plus — $6.99/month. Everything in Pro, plus unlimited SBAR verbal handoff reports.

Why no account?
Charts are encrypted on-device with AES-256, and the encryption key lives in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore — never on a server, never in a cloud backup. When you tap End Shift, the app overwrites and deletes the storage keys, then destroys the encryption key itself. Encrypted blobs that remain on disk become mathematically unrecoverable.
Because there is no patient identifier on the device and no key to recover, there is nothing for an account, a login, or a cloud backup to protect — and nothing for any future request to recover. That is the trade: you keep total control, the app keeps the data surface as small as it can be.
